    Things to do in Innsbruck

As the capital of Tyrol, a bustling college town and a host Winter Olympic Games in 1964,  1976 and 2012, you’re guaranteed a ton of off-mountain things to do in Innsbruck—and most of them are free or relatively inexpensive. This historic city sees a lot of year-round sightseeing, particularly in the “Golden Roof” sector in Innsbruck Old Town. In the 16th Century an Austrian emperor commissioned the gilding of more than 2,500 golden roof shingles—it’s a sight you don’t want to miss. While you’re in sightseeing mode be sure to check out the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandem, which houses some exceptional European masters, like Gustav Klimt. For a look into traditional Tyrol art and crafts, like Christmas cribs and hand-carved sleighs head to the The Volkskunst Museum. If you’re visiting Innsbruck around Christmas-time, there’s nothing like experiencing the city’s idyllic Christmas Market, which features nearly a hundred arts and crafts decorations.

Experience views of Innsbruck atop the Olympic ski jump at Bergisel Stadium, which was features in the 1964 and 1976 Winter Games.
